After their wedding ceremony at Westminster Abbey on 29th April, and a host of celebrations up and down the country, newly-weds Prince William and his new wife, Princess Kate, will be looking forward to getting away from it all for their honeymoon. Of course, this honeymoon should include a tropical climate, stunning scenery, somewhere fit for a Prince (and his Princess). Well look no further, because it's rumoured that William and Kate are due to jet off to Australia for a luxurious stay on Lizard Island, a National Park located in the country’s dazzling Great Barrier Reef.
As well as the Island’s idyllic location, breath- taking views, and no less than 24 long white sandy beaches, the resort offers five-star cuisine and a luxurious spa retreat. For the more active there is snorkelling, deep-sea game fishing and world famous diving that is just a stone’s throw away.
Although their wedding night will be spent at Buckingham Palace’s Belgian Suite and followed with a traditional visit to Balmoral, it's rumoured that this will be followed by a trip to Lizard Island soon after. Hailed as one of the top ten island destinations for honeymooners, Lizard Island has proved popular with other Royals, particularly a younger Prince Charles during his bachelor days.
During a recent trip to Cairns, William hinted at his and Kate’s honeymoon plans, saying: “I’ve always wanted to dive the Great Barrier Reef – maybe we’ll have a honeymoon in Cairns.” Lizard Island is, after all, just a one- hour flight from regional city Cairns, in Australia’s far northern state Queensland.
As with most other details of the Royal Wedding, there is much speculation about the Royal honeymoon so nothing is certain. One limiting factor is the Prince’s job as a rescue helicopter pilot which, with just two weeks’ leave. This could place a limit on what is possible for the couple. Perhaps a holiday will be postponed until later in the year, but needless to say, their honeymoon period will be a sweet one wherever and whenever it is spent.
